Emotional Intelligence & Healthcare

Learning the techniques of emotional intelligence (EI) is a process of understanding and connecting to self. Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions. Equally important is the ability to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

Developing emotional intelligence is the unravelling of who you are now and the creating of what you are meant to become.

There are several steps to Emotional Intelligence. The following are my examples:

Emotional Awareness:

Emotional awareness is being cognizant that we have feelings.

  • Recognize when you may become, or are angry, happy, or sad, you have experienced emotion and are aware of how you are feeling.

Children and adults learn so much in school/universities, from math to history, sciences to languages. However, there is a missing link. You just need to recognize that it’s ok to acknowledge your feelings.

Emotional Connectiveness:

Emotional connectiveness is understanding that there is a relationship between your emotions and your body.

  • Recognize that your emotions get stuck in your bodies when you don’t acknowledge them.

These stuck emotions may cause dis-ease. Yes, there are names or diagnoses given to conditions our human body experiences, there are even tests to prove the diagnoses. However, what is rarely done in healthcare is connecting emotions to illness.

Emotional Wellbeing:

Emotional wellbeing is learning how to feel safe enough to articulate needs on an emotional level.

  • Recognize when ignored emotions are causing physical dis-ease

This is where you create wholeness and completeness in your life. You will feel, hear, and see things differently. You will experience freedom, success and peace from increasing your physical and emotional health. You will bring harmony into your life and to those around you.

Practicing these steps can result in the following outcomes:

  • Learn how to feel safe enough to articulate needs on an emotional level

  • Understand and know how to put feelings into words

  • Recognize when ignored emotions are causing physical dis-ease

  • Increase physical and emotional health

  • Create success in life by reducing burnout
